‘Normal People’ crept up on to me and into my heart unexpectedly it’s thoughtful and clever and quietly enthralling. I really loved ‘Normal People’, which was my first Sally Rooney novel, and I enjoyed ‘Conversations with Friends’, but I think ‘Beautiful World, Where are You’ is my least favourite so far. Are they standing in the last lighted room before the darkness, bearing witness to something? Will they find a way to believe in a beautiful world? They worry about sex and friendship and the world they live in. They desire each other, they delude each other, they get together, they break apart. In Dublin, her best friend Eileen is getting over a break-up and slips back into flirting with Simon, a man she has known since childhood.Īlice, Felix, Eileen and Simon are still young - but life is catching up with them. In you have managed to avoid the Rooney discourse, this is what her third novel is about:Īlice, a novelist, meets Felix, who works in a warehouse, and asks him if he'd like to travel to Rome with her. But I read it, I have thoughts and it’s my (and Sarah’s) website and I want to talk about it! So brace yourselves. If you’re involved in the book world at all then it’s been pretty inescapable since it was even announced. It took me a while to decide if it was worth me adding my thoughts about this book to the universe because it’s every where.
